Like our #250 Jet Black, which this #275 Hot Black is replacing, this black dye is best tub dyed in hot (130° to 150°F) water. Tub dyes with a very neutral deep black cast on cotton. With Soda Ash on silk this dye gives a deep blackish brown, and with vinegar on silk it came out black in our tests, which none of the other Fiber Reactive blacks do. We even got a slightly lighter "shade of black" on wool when dyed with hot water and vinegar on the stove! Tie-dye came out really black in warm ambient room temp of 75°F or more - warmer is better (unlike #250, which yeilds shades from pea green to grey in tie-dye unless it has applied heat like electric blankets or being covered in black plastic in full sun). We are very excited about this black! Try it! To get back to the main dye page, click here.

Used it on silk which resulted in an even and rich black. Have not tried it on cotton yet.

I really screwed up my husbands new, expensive black sweatshirt by leaving a stain removal spray on it too long. The spot left was much worse than the original small grease spot. A black dye was my only 'out'. Jet Black just isn't a deep black so when Dharma offered a trial of Hot Black I jumped on it. Great timing!! I treated the bleached spot with a full reconcentrated dye and let it sit for a few minutes before immersing the entire sweatshirt in a more dilute solution. It came out well, but not great. So I repeated the process. Now - NO SPOTS show on this nice sweatshirt. The insignia was embroidered with polyester threads so it remained visible and untouched. I will definitely order more of this new black to have on hand for other screw-ups as well as my regular dye binges!

Used for regular cotton tie dye, it is the blackest black we've encounter with very little fuss. Followed all Dharma directions for mixing, used Urea to paste and had wonderful results.

I have only used this once. It is better than the Jet Black, but still too much washes out after setting.
