I began making tie-dyes for myself because it was fun, and I enjoyed wearing them. At first, I used RIT dye, and the colors faded. In 1992, a friend's aunt told me about Procion dye and Dharma Trading Company, and I've been using it ever since. I purchased a kit and some books. After some experimenting and a lot of trial and error, I managed to produce tie-dyes that I thought looked pretty good. Over time, I noticed people would compliment me on my work whenever I wore my tie-dyes, and would ask where I got them. In 1997, I began selling by word-of-mouth and attending festivals where my brightly colored booth attracted still more tie-dye fans. Please see my website for more examples of my work: http://www.wickedlywise.com/. Each piece is hand dyed, and I offer a variety of styles and sizes, including adult (up to 4X-Large), children, women, and infant.
I use Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes, Soda Ash Fixer, Urea, Synthrapol and Sodium Alginate. Books I've used are Rainbow Tie Dye, Tie Dye, Back By Popular Demand, Tie Dye to Die For and Batik You Can't Resist, and both DVDs by Tom and Martine.
