Sodium Alginate is pure kelp (seaweed) - it's commonly used to thicken food. It is the most economical thickener for Dharma's Fiber Reactive Dyes and it works as a thickener for other liquids as well. Use whenever you want to use dyes more like a paint. You can then brush the dyes on and they will stay put, as well as stamping, stenciling or silk screening the dyes. Dyes are more work than Paint to use in these methods, but the reward is, they leave absolutely no feel on the fabric the way paints can.
Sprinkle the thickener into the chemical water or liquid dye slowly, mixing continuously. (You can also use a blender - add the alginate through the top with the blender going). Let sit for an hour or so to continue to thicken before use. Refrigerate to store. Don't over-thicken, thinner is better.
We have two kinds: High viscosity, low solids for cotton, and Low viscosity, high solids for silk. The silk one allows you to draw finer lines but requires you to use more.
You can use them interchangeably. Specify which one you prefer.
Not recommended for thickening Paints.

Dharma's Sodium Alginate is so much more concentrated than other's I have used. It was a great surprise that I only had to use about half the quantity I used with other brands. I highly recommend this product for silk screening and dye painting.

I think this works well to thicken my dyes but it's difficult to dissolve it. They suggest putting it in the blender but I haven't done that. I just shake the heck out of it!

Very useful for thickening fiber reactive dyes. I've used this for thickening dye into a gelatinous consistency to paint on black dye for a stained-glass effect--works great!

As good as a clotty thing can be. Works with wisk. I don't know what the difference is between the cotton and silk stuff, but the silk seems to dissolve better.

might have given this a great rating but I'v only just begun using this and therefore am still experimenting.overall does thicken the dyes well,it seems although it did'nt make my dyes as thick as some described it would maybe it is because we have soft water.

This is wonderful to have! It does not take much of this to thicken the dye.. and it takes a while to dissolve, but it is wonderful for mixing with the dye, if you use it to write on fabric or draw fine lines.

you do need to allow time for this thickener to thicken.
It also stores well in tight zip lock bags. I have made a batch to last a few weeks.

it does the trick but more specific quantity guidelines would be helpful.
It clumps very easily and I find that putting it in the blender with near-boiling water helped solve that problem.

This stuff is everything i expected. Works great, and i like using all natural products. It's a little time-consuming to get it mixed in, but a blender does the trick.
