The Festival of Quilts 2008 DVD

The Festival of Quilts in England is one of the world's favorite destinations for quilting and textile arts. Each year more than 25,000 quilting and textile artists and enthusiasts come from all over the world to judge and be judged by a panel of their peers in what has come to be regarded as 'the most prestigious quilting award ceremony in Europe today'.

From over 1,000 entrants, over 30 get awarded a first, second or third prize and new for 2008, there was a Best in Show award. Categories include Art Quilts, Contemporary Quilts, Traditional Quilts, Miniatures and many more. More than $50,000 in prize money is generously given by leading manufacturers of sewing, quilting and textile art supplies, educational institutions, and associations.

Our local Galli Film Studios (Produced our Silk Painting and Shibori DVDs) was selected as the film production company for the 2008 Festival of Quilts Commemorative DVD, and for coming years as well. For 2008, they assembled a wonderful cross-mix of traditional and contemporary quilting and textile artists, and ventured north of Birmingham to Yorkshire where they caught up with famous quilters Lilian Hedley, Philippa Naylor, and took a private tour of the recently opened Museum of The Quilter's Guild of the British Isles, located in a 14th Century Guild Hall in York. This DVD gives you a chance to see what some of the best quilters in the world are doing. Why is Dharma carrying this DVD? Because we are amazed with what some of these artists do with our plain fabric, dyes and paints to create their own custom fabrics for their quilts, and the rest are fantastic too. It is fun and very inspiring!

Deconstructed Screen Printing DVD
In this visually stimulating DVD, Fiber Artist Kerr Grabowski leads you through the exciting and versatile process she has dubbed Deconstructed Screen Printing. This technique is not a science. You will not get identical results with each print as with traditional screen printing. Each print with the same screen will evolve and change.
In this technique, objects with interesting texture are placed beneath a blank, clean screen. Thickened dye is then applied to the screen where it builds up along the lines of texture created by the covered object. Once the screen is dry, it can then be “printed” with release paste, which actually serves to re-moisten the thickened dye, allowing it to deposit on the printing surface. As the screen is used, the prints will change, and morph, as more dye is deposited and less dye remains on the screen. This breakdown of the concept of identical prints, as well as the breakdown of the initial screen image, is what lends the title "Deconstructed" Screen Printing.
For beginners and experts alike, this 3+ hr video covers the basics and demonstrates techniques that, while easy to use, will yield sophisticated results that are sure the trigger the artist's muse! Included are instructions on screens, squeegees, print boards, Fiber Reactive MX dye, and print paste. In addition, this DVD is full of inspiring samples of students work and a gallery of artists using DSP in their own work. This DVD is so enthralling it nearly shut down the office when we viewed it the first time!

Shibori DVD
In 1608 eight formerly farming families in Japan settled along a stretch of the Tokaido or ‘eastern sea road’ connecting Kyoto and Osaka to the new capital, Edo, now Tokyo. Taking up handicraft, they developed a peasant textile industry, initially mimicking the fine silk Shibori techniques found in Kyoto and ultimately developing their own methods and techniques for working with silk and cotton fabrics to create magnificent designs for summer and winter clothing and home decoration. Narumi joined in with the neighboring village of Arimatsu to create a cottage industry that would eventually grow to be known worldwide as “Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori”.
The Guild of Artisans of Arimatsu and Narumi in collaboration with Studio Galli Productions has released the most comprehensive overview of Shibori available in honor of reaching 400 years of continued production. Each part of the process is meticulously detailed in this sumptuous film, with narrative provided by acclaimed Shibori artist and scholar, Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada. Visit studios and workshops to see the Shibori processes demonstrated by the most expert artisans available today. Includes contemporary and historical examples of Shibori textiles hand made by local artisans.

Improvisational Screen Printing DVD
This is not about traditional silk screen printing methods, but more about, as the title implies-improvisational techniques using everyday or easily accessible materials. Temporary or removable surfaces include using wax, flour, aquarelle crayons, freezer paper stencils and plastic sheets.
Jane's approach is informal and allows for creativity to flow! Most inspiring. In fact, I went out and bought a silkscreen after watching this video!
Another approach is with permanent surfaces such as using interfacing over a permanent surface which allows you to do a multi color print in one pass. The other surface is spray paint.
She only touches on what products to silkscreen with, so refer to our catalogue or web site for more info on this.
She gives helpful background info on screen mesh, squeegees and stretching your own screen. The DVD has a nice pace, is interesting and fun to watch with a little surprise at the end!
