Featured Artist : Emily Omesi
Artist Bio / Statement
Emily Omesi and I am a 17 year old textile and fashion designer. I love Dharma and I would be honored to be a Featured Artist! I do custom work and alterations for those in my community, and have sold some of my garments to a local boutique. My love for art began to bloom at a very young age, and I am still growing and learning. All spectrums of art, have been a major part of my life; It’s a way for me to express a deeper me, and to make a statement.
My favorite form of art, is fashion design, and I incorporate it into my everyday life. whether its creating, learning, or styling, fashion has never failed to bring joy into my life. When creating garments, I like to let the material speak for itself, and use forms of intricate pleating and different shapes and textiles to stand out. My biggest goal as a designer, is to be the most original and unique. I live to create fashion, it consumes me. I want to be able to live my life, everyday, as a designer. I have dreams of attending a prestigious college for Fashion Design, having my work in New York Fashion Week, and my own fashion line.
My design style is definitely artistic and unique, as I love to create my own textiles through the processes of Ebru and Shibori. The majority of my designs are bohemian and everyday wear, yet I still create couture pieces. I am still discovering who I am as a designer, but I know for sure that I want my clothing to make every woman feel beautiful. My ultimate goal in life, is to become a fashion designer and create clothing, that speaks louder than words.
When I create artwork, I like to feel in control, and to have a clear vision of the end result. In an art class, I usually gravitate towards watercolors, ink, and acrylic, as I feel most comfortable with thesematerials. I enjoy using lines, contours, and different textures in my work.
When it comes to working in fashion and textile design, I like to drape, pattern make, Ebru and do shibori dye work. My favorite fabrics to use are silks and cottons as they take any dye or Ebru beautifully. With this being said, I like to experiment with all fabrics as they all have something different to offer a design.
I enjoy experimenting with all types of materials, and techniques. I like to challenge myself when it comes to art, and see how far I can go. I am excited to further my knowledge of art through the rest of my high school years, college life, and beyond.
Dharma has some of the best silks for any dye work especially silks! I also have used their methocel for mixing my size (the thick water which my paints float upon) for my Ebru and it works great!
