Also known as "China Silk", these lightweight and breezy blank Habotai scarves are the most popular for dyeing and painting, probably because they are the most economical of all the silks. That also makes these very popular with teachers for class projects, Mother's day gifts, etc. Silk painting instructors often choose these for their student's first projects. The price is right for big fund raisers too! They make the perfect weight scarf for summer wear. "Playsilks" are very popular with the kids right now, and these are what are usually used. These have hand rolled hems with 100% silk thread. Ready to dye and paint!

We also have a few sizes in black, by popular demand. They look great when used with some of our more opaque or metallic fabric paints or the foils. Some folks use them with discharge techniques too. Just keep in mind that there is never a guarantee that a black will always discharge, because especially with imported stuff, the dye they are using can change. Also, the color you get when you discharge can vary widely, from a light tan to a dark rust brown. Always best to test if you want to discharge a black garment or fabric.

We recommend, especially if you are re-selling, to pre-wash in Hot water and Synthrapol or our Professional Textile Detergent, all silk before dyeing or painting to remove any leftover residue from the silk worms (Seracin) or finger prints and other stuff that can cause the fabric to dye unevenly. Our product Milsoft is excellent for restoring the soft hand to silk after dyeing.

I have been actively dyeing these for 2.5 years and although I sell many of them I also wear them daily - so I'm giving feedback from both perspectives.

The fabric is beautiful! It dyes well and easily (FYI - I use the microwave method listed in the How-To's). The finished products are gorgeous, professional-looking pieces. Without reservation I recommend these.

That said, here are a few things to be aware of (please note I didn't feel any of them warranted lowering my rating - so these are simply FYI's for you). 1) Every once and a while one slips in that accidentally was sewn with a thread that won't dye - if that happens - let Dharma know and they will replace it - it should not be that way. 2) I find that during the dyeing process about 30% of the time the tag comes at least partially off - I don't care and have not found that my customers do so I don't find this a big deal just mentioning it. 3) Finally, it is hand sewn, so you do find some imperfections, but they are minor and so I just warn customers that is part of what they may find and advise they simply gently trim any loose threads.

Again - this is a fabulous product - I've dyed hundreds of these guys by hand (and the 5mm ones). Highly recommend!

i have dyed over 1,000 of these over five years as playsilks so i know the product well. as others said the price is good. HOWEVER, the quality has gone down particularly in the last couple years. there are less stitches in the hand rolled hems and it is becoming RARE to wash and dry a silk WITHOUT having the hem unroll in one or more spots. very disappointing. i have called and complained to no avail. please consider how you can up the quality of the work on these dharma!

I bought these (24" & 31" squares, I think) to use as playsilks for my little girl. We received them much sooner than I expected ~thanks! Her brothers and I dyed them with koolaid - which was great fun. They turned out beautifully. We are quite pleased & are trying to think of some other little girl we can buy more for :-)

This product (2008) is not up to professional standards. Many breaks in the hems after one washing and worst of all, the hem thread is not silk and will not dye with french or jacquard silk dyes but stays white. Very disappointing and $ lost.

I have ordered many of these silks for dyeing (with the silk thread for hems) and they've been great to work with. I'm pretty hard on them to dye them and they seem to hold up beautifully. I can't speak for long term use as I dye these and then they're out of my hands lol BUT from what I can tell - they're wonderful.

This fabric is beautiful. It's so sheer you can see through it. It drapes, flows, gleams, and is in all ways beautiful and just what the mind pictures when you say "silk scarf". The hems are nicely finished and held up well to its first washing.

A very nice item to dye, my customers all seem to notice the quality of the silk and the hand hemming and how well it shines with dyeing. I also use black for discharge and over dyeing. I do very well them.

Wonderful, as always. Well woven fabric, quality rolled seams, takes dye well provided they are laundered before hand. If I don't launder these well, I have trouble with gummy spots in the fabric and little places near the seam that don't take the dye as well.

These are great when you think how inexpensive they are! I think I have had one with poly thread once, the rest have been fine. And when you consider the hemming is done by hand, I can't complain about that either! These take the dye beautifully, and if you follow that old adage "you get what you pay for", I get more than I pay for with Dharma's habotai scarves! My students love them too.

These are nice. The edges are stitched well and they work good for silk painting. The light weight lets me do more detail work on them without worry that the dye will leak through the resist. They are light weight, so some people will prefer the heavier silks, but they are good.

Great product. Sometimes the seams on the odd scarf are not sewn too well though. I just ordered for the first time some black Habotai silk scarves and I'm disappointed that the dye is not fixed properly, which I discovered when I pre-washed,(scoured), the silk.

These Habotai silks are the greatest. I do rust dyeing, herbal and natural dyeing and the process I use bring out the best colors - I cannot keep any of the silks in stock.

Wonderful to dye for those who like immediate gratification. About three hours from start to finish. You do have to wait til they cool from the microwave. When wet they are very clingy. If dry very slippery.

Consistent quality in your scarf blanks - and I love that they are hemmed with silk thread (nothing is more discouraging than dying a beautiful scarf and having white thread screaming out from the hems)

Hem is done with a thread that is not good quality and it shows when the scarf is already finished because it doesnt take the dyes evenly. Is there a way to ask your supplier to improve the thread?

I have not yet done the painting on these that I had planned.( A friend was ordering paints and that fell through due to life issues) I have recently(2 days ago)been able to order painting supplies so intend to be able to complete this project soon.I do not expect any problems.

The thread used to hem the edges is not natural/ silk and does not absorb the dye! Therefore, the painted the thread remains while. Also the hems unthread easily and fall apart.

This silk has been perfect for my projects. It is easy to work with and accepts the dyes and paints beautifully. I can't wait to incorporate it into a special project with my class. Sizes on the scarves are questionable. A square scarf may not actually be a square scarf. Reminds me of lumber, where a "2x4" is not actually two inches by four inches.

The scarves cam out in beautiful colors and took the dye very well. I ordered a few black scarves and as luck would have it they were a set that the color could not be removed from. I will find something to do with them.

Smoth, soft, silky (LOL). These scarves take the dye and hold it, stretch well and the gutta tubes slide right along with no surface snags to mar the application. They feel wonderful and the quality is superb. Plus economical enough to resell after decoration.

I wish you could attach the tag so that it did not compromise the scarf stitch when it is removed...or am I doing something wrong?....I use these more and more with my preschool creative art students and they are a huge hit, not only with the children but their moms love them too and are always borrowing the 'wall hanging' art they made.

We use hundreds of these scarves every year at camp. They are economical, allowing us to expose many children to high quality techniques such as painting with Seta Silk and shibori, not merely the classic tie-dye of every other camp.

ONLY PROBLEM I AM HAVING IS THAT SOME OF THE ROLLED HEM SEEMS TO BE TWISTED AT TIMES. YOU HAVE A WRONG & RIGHT SIDE ON THE SAME SIDE. ALSO, THE THREAD DOES NOT WANT TO TAKE THE COLOR OF THE PAINT. PRICE IS GREAT & SHIPPING IS ALWAYS FASTER THAN I CAN BELIEVE.

Great quality and easy to color using Jacquard Silk Colors (Green Label. I'm an idiot and was able to do it with no problems! Just make certain you buy Jacquard Silk Colors Dyeset Fixative to lock the colors in! The colors are GREAT! I use them in my Magic Act (www.magicbykel.com) and have saved TONS of money making my own "Magic Silks". 10 STARS (if possible) !!!!!

These are quite nice for playsilks. The stitching on the edges could be more secure but apart from that perfect. I love how nice this silk looks dyed, I used the procion dyes with vinegar and salt, also did yellow with tumeric.

The scarves I ordered were supposed to be 35" X 35". I received scarves that were 34 X 34. It wouldn't have been a problem if someone had called me beforehand to let me know so that I could have purchased the stretchers that would have fit those. I had to go out special to buy ones that fit.

I dyed 50 scarves for a school play using the microwave method. All of them look wonderful, just as nice as the more expensive scarves I purchased several years ago and dyed for gifts. I almost always receive my orders (online and before 11:00) the day after ordering - that is wonderful.

You need to know that the hems are not sewn with natural thread , but synthetic thread because the dye/paint is not absorbed and remains white after the dyes have been put on.
Every person has commented this to me. You may want to do something about this one because it is a serious problem.

A great silk canvas that takesdye well. I never pre-wash and in the years I've been using these have only had a couple of gum spots. I tell customers these are natural variations in the fabric. Add a drop of fray check to each corner to prevent unrolling and they last longer.

Most of these were great, but a couple of them were not, in fact, hemmed with silk thread. This became obvious after they were dyed; the contrast is not attractive. Hopefully the scarves that I haven't yet dyed will have the silk thread.

I made these into playsilks for my little girl, and her and all her friends LOVE them! They dyed nicely and are beautiful, fabulous fun.

The quality on these is pretty consistent. Once in a while I'll get one with an impurity woven in, or a loose seam. One thing I would prefer is that the tags were consistently added on afterwards for easy removal. Sometimes removing the tag damages the hem, other times the tag comes loose and falls off.

it was a little bit too thin for me. When I attached it to the frame it had the tendency to tear. But the painting itself went very good.

I dye these scarves a lot, and love them, but the hemming sometimes comes undone and I have to mend them after I've dyed them. This is particularly true for the area around the label. I cut the label off -- with great care-- but it doesn't always leave the hemming stitch intact.

I have used many different sizes and types of scarves. These are a popular weight and size to sell. I use Jacquard Red Label dyes and the serti method to paint florals. Can't keep them in the Gift Shop.
