Alter Ego Dyes are designed specifically for dyeing patterned Silk/Rayon blends like Devore Silk Satin and Devore Silk Velvet, where the backing is silk and the pattern overlay is rayon. The silk dyes only color the silk fibers and the rayon dyes only color the rayon fibers creating beautiful two-color effects. The results are fantastic and they are so easy to use, you will love them!

Remember: Alter Ego Dye Fixative is required to use these dyes.

    One can use regular white vinegar and table salt to replace the salt and vinegar in the kit (#AEDK).

    Product Description
    These dyes are tailored specifically for dyeing patterned Silk/Rayon blends, like Devore Satin where the backing is silk and the pattern overlay is rayon, or the silk velvet where the pile is rayon and the backing is silk. Alter Ego dyes provide colors for the silk fibers, and colors for the rayon fibers. You choose one of each, and pour them both into the dye bath with your fabric or scarf, vinegar, salt and fixative, and shazam! beautifully dyed in the 2 colors you chose.
    The silk dye only dyes the silk fibers, and the rayon dye only dyes the rayon fibers. Check out the pics above to see examples. Absolutely fabulous results, and so easy to use even a blind-folded crazy man in a straight jacket could do it! Just throw everything into a pot on the stove, simmer and stir for about 30 minutes and booyah! If you like cut silk/rayon velvet or devore satin goods, in any form, you have to try these dyes! The results are fantastic, and they are so easy to use you will love them.
    NOTE: The salt and vinegar in the kit can be replaced with regular table salt and white vinegar if necessary. The Alter Ego Dye Fixative IS required. It cannot be replaced with Soda Ash or Dharma Dye Fixative.

    Six steps to dyeing:
    1. Put Lukewarm water in a saucepan.
    2. Add the two colors (silk and viscose), the fixative, the vinegar, and the cooking salt. MIX WELL!
      NOTE: The colors will be mixed in the water but they will separate again on the fabric.
    3. Rinse the fabric in lukewarm water, squeeze it out and while still damp put it in the saucepan (the salt will not dissolve completely).
    4. Put the saucepan on low heat and stir during 5 minutes in order to homogenise the dyes, then increase the heat up to boiling for 20 minutes.
      Turn the heat off and leave to stand for 10 minutes.
    5. Rinse under running water and then wash in lukewarm soapy water. Finish rinsing in clear water and squeeze out the fabric.
    6. Lay the fabric flat on an absorbent paper to dry or, better still, iron the fabric on the wrong side protecting it with an absorbent paper.

    Fun dye to use on silk/rayon fabric. You get to watch it dye differently on the 2 types of fibers, yet be able to do this all at the same time in the same dyebath.

    Easy to use. I use a syringe from children's medecine to measure ml's. I found that the recommended dye amounts per weight of silk/rayon pretty liberal - that is I cut the amount of dye used per item and colors are still pretty saturated and bright. This lowers the cost per item (it is pretty expensive). Colors can be mixed to provide different shades and custom colors - I used a blotting filter to gauge the shade and color - just if you add color to the pot, be sure and thoroughly mix it before adding the material.

    I MADE NINE SCARVES WITH THE KIT AS CHRISTMAS PRESENTS. IT WAS SO EASY, AND THE RESULT IS BEAUTIFUL. THE FRINGE IS CRINKLY, BUT I THINK I SAW A SOLUTION ELSEWHERE ON THIS SITE. I COULD MAKE MORE WITH THE DYES LEFT FROM THE KIT.

    What a trip. Lots of fun and great drama!One studentdid some rayon thread stitchery and some discharge dyes for a stunning effect. I want to try some rayon applique also. What a great idea these dyes are.

    These are great dyes. Easy and quick with good color and fun to use. When making pastel colors very little dye is needed. I will continue to use. Selling well too!

    I am a very "happy camper" with these products. I love them. It would be helpful if you could give us some hints on how to deal with fringe. Also can we mix the altar ego dyes? Or do they become muddied when mixed? Also some great silk and viscose combinations.

    Incredibly easy to use, and forgiving of somewhat inacurate measurements. It's a shame that the dyes are only available in large bottles (except for the kit) because I can't imagine using 250 ml of dye, so I'm not likely to buy additional colors.

    Again, I wish that the silk cut velvet scarves came without fringe since I have to cut it off and it is a mess to do.

    I really like them, but find the recipes to be way off - when I have to scurry for extra silk or rayon to get the dye to exhaust, I know that the idea is to get me to use more of the dye. I usually dye twice the amount of what their recipes say, and get good color! Also the greens are icky - I will no longer buy them, but mix my own.

    Magical effects..... wish starter kit had included a blue for silk and very much wish you stocked smaller sizes to buy as with other dyes.
