Product Description

The Indigo Dye Kit - Bringing ancient craft to contemporary fashion.

Indigo dye, which comes from a plant, is one of the oldest (thousands of years!)dyes used for coloring fabrics and the one still used today to color blue jeans. This natural dye process has long been and is still used in many cultures around the world. The unique characteristics of indigo dyeing make it easy to create wonderful resist patterns on fabric. This kit brings the ancient art of indigo dyeing to the home dyer in a user friendly formulation. With a resurgence of interest in indigo and ethnic patterning in the fashion world, this kit is sure to be a winner! Because of the fact that the dye has to be reduced to get it into solution, and oxidized to have it turn blue again, it is a fun science project too!

A unique feature of this kit is that it is not a one time dyeing experience. The dye vat can keep up to several weeks and dye more than 15 yards or 5 pounds of fabric or 15 shirts. This allows the dyer several sessions to experiment and discover the magic of indigo! Indigo is for use with natural fabrics and clothing that haven't been treated with any finishes.

Each kit contains:

  • Pre-Reduced Indigo 20 grams
  • Reducing Agent 250 grams
  • Gloves - 1 pr.
  • Rubber bands
  • 2 wood blocks
  • Quick start instructions
  • Instruction booklet with dye patterns and historical and cultural overview of indigo

You'll also need:

Kit ingredients are also available separately so you can continue dyeing with indigo. Refer to pre-reduced indigo crystals, #PRIC, for more dye, and know that the reducing agent is a mixture of 60% soda ash (#FIX) and 40% thiourea dioxide (#CR), both available from Dharma Trading Co.

I've dyed with natural indigo before, also from Dharma. But this kit is the BOMB. Gets a fairly dark color (could redip more times next time) and is easy, and will dye as much fabric as advertised. Great fun for the money and I will use it again. Instructions are clear, even for me, and I'm not very experienced at dyeing.

I dyed capris four adult tops, and two children's tops using this kit. They all turned out great. Easy to use.

Absolutely beautiful, vivid results. I used it on bamboo rayon pieces and they turned out wonderfully - the dye kept the whites bright and allowed varying shades of blue depending on how long you keep your pieces in the vat. Beware, it can be a mess! The project is best done outside.

See what I dyed here, the bottom two photos..

This kit is so much fun, and easy to use. We've done two of them now. I used one for a class project, I mixed up the bucket the day before, then we tied up and dipped 24 bandanas (once each). Later at home I did multiple dips of two adult t-shirts, and I can tell it is about used up, but still going. For the class project I filled up a small jam jar with the liquid, so they could see the clear greenish color that is usually obscured by the metallic blue layer on the top, more fun!

I wish there had been a clearer idea of how long to keep the fabric in the dye for a darker blue. The instructions might forewarn the dyer that in order to re-dye, the resist areas have to remain untouched. Otherwise, the indigo dye was easy to use and dyed both cotton and silk.

This worked great for what I used it for! I used the solution in a spray bottle and sprayed my fading jeans and brought them back to life! :)

Great kit! It was very easy to get started, and we dyed 7 yards of cotton fabric and 5 shirts. The instructions were a little vague about how long to leave the fabric in the dye (not long!), and I would recommend Synthrapol for washing the material afterward. I wish Jacquard had included a 'color sample' in their instructions showing different numbers of dips, but we had tons of fun and would definitely do it again.

This is a beautiful kit. It was easy to set up the Indigo vat. The instructions were well done to give a basic idea of how to do Shibori resists. Be prepared to collect more rubber bands and craft sticks and dowels and such if this is for a group.

Our group had never used indigo. We bought the kit to give us some background knowledge to help insure that the whole group experience later would be positive. The kit worked just fine and gave us good results, but we probably didn't need to purchase it. The other material on Dharma's website was sufficient for our use. The kit may have been on the expensive side for what we got.
