Product Description

The Indigo Dye Kit - Bringing ancient craft to contemporary fashion. [Instructions Manual]

Indigo dye, which comes from a plant, is one of the oldest (thousands of years!)dyes used for coloring fabrics and the one still used today to color blue jeans. This natural dye process has long been and is still used in many cultures around the world. The unique characteristics of indigo dyeing make it easy to create wonderful resist patterns on fabric. This kit brings the ancient art of indigo dyeing to the home dyer in a user friendly formulation. With a resurgence of interest in indigo and ethnic patterning in the fashion world, this kit is sure to be a winner! Because of the fact that the dye has to be reduced to get it into solution, and oxidized to have it turn blue again, it is a fun science project too!

A unique feature of this kit is that it is not a one time dyeing experience. The dye vat can keep up to several weeks and dye more than 15 yards or 5 pounds of fabric or 15 shirts. This allows the dyer several sessions to experiment and discover the magic of indigo! Indigo is for use with natural fabrics and clothing that haven't been treated with any finishes.

Each kit contains:

  • Pre-Reduced Indigo 20 grams
  • Reducing Agent 250 grams
  • Gloves - 1 pr.
  • Rubber bands
  • 2 wood blocks
  • Quick start instructions
  • Instruction booklet with dye patterns and historical and cultural overview of indigo

You'll also need:

Kit ingredients are also available separately so you can continue dyeing with indigo. Refer to pre-reduced indigo crystals, #PRIC, for more dye, and know that the reducing agent is a mixture of 60% soda ash (#FIX) and 40% thiourea dioxide (#CR), both available from Dharma Trading Co.

I've dyed with natural indigo before also from Dharma. But this kit is the BOMB. Gets a fairly dark color (could redip more times next time) and is easy and will dye as much fabric as advertised. Great fun for the money and I will use it again. Instructions are clear even for me and I'm not very experienced at dyeing.

I love this Indigo Tie Dye Kit! So easy to use and economical too. I was able to do Japanese pole-wrap techniques with this dye and made up amazing and unique pieces. I highly recommend for anyone who has never tried indigo dying. Produces beautiful shades of blue that flatter all skin types.

Excellent results. Dyed about three pounds of cotton fabric some silk ribbon three huge skeins of handspun over three days. After that the flower shrunk up and the liquid turned blue--exhausted. Ordered several more kits.

This is such a fun project! Everything needed is included and the instructions are clear (and not too difficult). I'm loving the fabric designs I've already created and plan on dying even more over the next few days.
