Product Description

Elegant Flat Crepe shawls and scarves with absolutely beautiful 100% silk fringe. Flat Crepe is like a cross between Crepe de Chine and Habotai. While it has the weight of Habotai, the flattened Crepe weave is much shinier. It drapes well and is an excellent surface for painting. The hems are hand sewn with silk thread in China. The fringe is difficult to make, hard to get, and not cheap. Very elegant!

Please note: The 8"x54" 11"x60", 14"x72" sizes have 4.5" fringe only at the two ends, so you can use them as scarves. Both the 35"x35" and 44"x44" sizes have 7" fringe on all four sides, so you can use them like shawls.  The fringe style of the 35"x35" and 44"x44" is different from the other sizes (please see pictures above left).

We recommend (especially if you are re-selling) to pre-wash all silk in Hot water and Synthrapol or our Professional Textile Detergent before dyeing or painting to remove any leftover residue from the silk worms (Seracin) or finger prints and other stuff that can cause the fabric to dye unevenly. Our product Milsoft is excellent for restoring the soft hand to silk after dyeing.

Remember, items with fringe can't just be thrown in the washer! Hand wash with care. Some folks say they have great success by confining the fringe in some way, like with some long chain basting stitches.

To straighten tangled fringe-------dry the scarf- gently comb the tangled fringe with a very large detangling comb-works gently and quickly-much less time needed than other methods such as braiding-

Adding hair conditioner to the fringe was a great suggestion. Worked like a charm!

I made the mistake of dyeing one of these in the machine in a lingerie bag thinking that would keep the fringe from tangling. Nope! However an hour of untangling later I had a stunning rich-colored soft elegant scarf. (Now I hand wash only :)

These are by far our favorite scarves for dyeing! They dye beautifully and the fringe is exquisite. We have seen lots of ideas for how to handle the fringe and we actually have a unique way to keep the fringe silky smooth and straight with no tangles. After hand washing blot the fringe with a towel to get out excess moisture. Then holding the body of the scarf in your hand whack the fringe against the edge of a table two to four times should do it. The fringe will be silky and straight. Lay it out on a towel and rake your fingertips through the fringe to release any remaining small tangles (usually very few). This method hasn't failed us yet. Now keep in mind we don't steam set our scarves. We use Colorhue or chemical set for Tinfix and Jacquard dyes. Hope this is helpful.

The 44" square scarf is a nice big size that allows for enough space to design something intricate in tiedyetritik. The fringe tangles but is easily untangled with gentle pulls--the silk threads slide against each other rather than sticking together the way cotton fiber does. They make nice table covers too.

I was a bit scared of managing the fringe when I read previous reviews. However I was painting the shawl and setting it in the microwave so the fringe was easy to manage. It has a lovely sheen I love it.

Here's the easiest way to keep the fringe straight while dyeing: Cut 4 narrow strips of iron-on interfacing and iron a pair to the ends of the fringes sticky sides together. Then after you've dyed dried and ironed the scarf cut off the fringe just above the interfacing. Your fringe will be half an inch shorter but nobody will notice.
