Discharge paste is a reducing agent for safely removing color from natural fibers, and is even safe on silk. It removes most fiber reactive dyes (such as
Dharma's Fiber Reactive MX dyes
), direct dyes, and
acid dyes
. It is thick enough to block print, brush it on, screen it on, stencil it on, etc. You can apply the paste to your fabric, let it dry and steam it with a steam iron or steam in a steamer for 10 minutes or so, until it stops discharging. Then wash your fabric in a good detergent like
Synthrapol
, and rinse in
Milsoft
to restore softness.
Discharge Paste does not always remove all of the color, it depends on the dye and the color to which it is applied. Always best to test. We have also found it works best when fairly fresh. It can be used for creating interesting negative image effects. Has strong ammonia smell. Use in silk painting and tie-dye: paint on retied, dyed garments after they have dried for great effects.
See our
Discharging Directions
for more info. It is fairly safe to use but does have a strong ammonia smell so use it in a well ventilated place.
Note - Due to a changes in the black dyes used on our
pre-dyed BLACK clothing items
, Discharge Paste sporadically works on these items. Test, test, test! At this point, the only thing working consistently on our pre-dyed black Rayon and Cotton clothing is pure bleach.

I will echo the perennial reminder: TEST! This was the first time I had tried discharging, and the results were not what I expected, but they were definitely interesting. I found that steaming with an iron did almost NOTHING. Had to use a pot on the stove with one of those folding metal steamer baskets. WOW! I discharged raw silk dyed with acid dye (color was spruce). Areas painted with the discharge paste turned shades of blue and orange. Very cool but very unexpected!

We love the results we get from the discharge paste. Depending on how we silk screen with it we have been able to get varied degrees of solid and distressed making every t-shirt a one of a kind. Our customers love the shirts. This is the easiest stuff we work with, too. Could not love it more.

I wish it was thicker, I think it would work better on stamps. I tried using a brayer to apply it to a stamp and it didn't spread evenly.

This didn't work for me that well, but I suspect I was using it on the wrong type of dye/paint.

This stuff works great! The viscosity is fine for screenprinting right out of the jar, though it is a bit gelatinous. And it discharges as soon as you start ironing it. Works great by itself, or as a base for light-colored inks. It works when mixed with ink, too, but not as well, because you're thinning out both your pigment, and your discharge potential.
I highly recommend this stuff! :)

Works great in dark colors, remember to apply two to three coats to get the lightest discharge effect. Be aware that when steaming the discharge has a very strong odor. That is the only I dislike. But the results are worth it!

This is fun to use and gives good results. The one Caveat is that you have to steam the fabric basically within one day of printing, or the discharged color goes to a darker shade, not as light as it could be. (I found this out by having to wait to finish my project)...My personal theory on this is that the discharge agent is not stable, til it is steamed or ironed and especially if it is hot &humid (which it is where I am now) it continues to oxidize and maybe absorb some of the dye back. It can be hard to do all this in one day if you have a large batch of printing to do but it gives the better results. Experimentation is key...

Nicely activates with heat. Almost too thick to use in silk screen.
