You can't tie-dye without the dye! Though you can use a variety of dyes to do tie-dye, our recommended and most popular is the Dharma Fiber Reactive Dye for all cotton, rayon, hemp and other plant fibers. (you can use it on silk, but some colors will shift) It's the one the professionals use and will put those low quality, over the counter dyes to shame. We also carry our Dharma Pigment Dye which is best if you need to plan to tie-dye with a group of small children and want to avoid chemicals and powders - the colors just won't be as intense and it isn't as cost effective. If you want to tie dye silk, you can use these products or any silk dye or paint that we carry.
Dharma Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes Pro's:
Best dye for cotton, rayons, linens, hemp and other plant based fibers. Best dye for Tie-Dye and Batik. Vibrant wash fast permanent colors. Easy to use. Does not need hot water. Economical! Con's:
Colors are still vibrant, but shift on silks and wools. Need to use with the proper chemicals. Do not work on synthetics.
Dharma Pigment Dye Pros:
It's a concentrated (so economical after dilution) pigment system that feels like dye instead of paint, is easy to use for
all kinds of techniques, is concentrated, non-toxic and works on most synthetics as well as natural fibers Cons:
Limited color selection, colors fade with washing the first time (typical of "dyeing" with pigments) - you have to like the unique "stonewashed" look
Pro's: Simple for children, no mixing of dyes and chemicals Con's: Needs to be simmered on a stove. Colors not as vibrant as traditional Tie-Dye - much more white areas.
